If there is any hesitation on Cain's part, it may stem from the lack of offensive support he has received since officially joining in 2005. Matt Cain's record, especially the last two years, have directly reflected the lack of offensive support he receives. In fact, in 2011, statistically one of his best years in the majors, he compiled a 2.88 ERA gave up just nine home runs and struck out 179 batters in 221.2 innings. his record was 12-11. By comparison, Ian Kennedy of the Arizona Diamondbacks had an identical ERA of 2.88, gave up 19 home runs, and struck out 198 batters in 222.0 innings. his record was 21-4.

With the difference in their records being the amount of run support Kennedy received and Cain didn't. Kennedy received an average of 6.12 runs per game from his offense good enough for 36th in the entire league, while Cain received 4.63 runs per contest, good enough for 89th in the entire league. Oh, and Cain's teammate Tim Lincecum received a league worst 3.82 runs per game of support – the only qualifying pitcher to receive under four runs of support on average.

So if Cain is being hesitant on talks for that reason, I don't really blame him. on the other hand I know that Cain is very quiet about his dealings and could be working with the Giants on a deal right now ironing out the small details. or perhaps that is just me being hopeful that Cain won't go elsewhere after the 2012 season. In my opinion, if the Giants and Cain don't strike a deal by the time the season rolls around, then I don't see a deal getting done before the year is out. Here's to hoping the Giants and Cain are close to getting a deal done.

As we wait for and Patriots to take the field in Indianapolis, we’re going to be running down the 10 biggest reasons why the Giants are headed to 42. Coming in at No. 1 is .

Throughout the years, the biggest knock on Eli Manning was that he just didn’t seem like a big-time franchise quarterback.

The skills were there and he had a Super Bowl ring, yet there was always something to make you think that Manning wasn’t quite as good as he should be. Sometimes it was the spoiled brat body language and facial expressions. other times it was the rush of everyone associated with the Giants to absolve him of every mistake by blaming it on teammates, and the running thread was the knack for coming up with a big turnover that sealed defeat for the Giants.

Put it all together and you had the overwhelming feeling that Eli didn’t belong on the same level as guys like Tom Brady, Drew Brees, Aaron Rodgers and Ben Roethlisberger. that was what led to the fateful moment before the season when Manning was asked if he was elite and, in his usual laconic matter, answered that he thought he was.

It was one thing to say it, but quite another to go out on the field and prove it. after a dismal opening performance in D.C., Manning did just that over the course of the season.

Susan G. Komen for the Cure reversed its decision to cut fundingfor and apologized for casting “doubt upon ourcommitment to our mission of saving women’s lives,” Komen founderand CEO Nancy Brinker said Friday.

In the face of growing pressure, the nation’s top fundraiser inthe fight against said it would revise the new policyunder which it had barred funding for Planned Parenthood.

Komen, acknowledging that the week has been “deeply unsettling,”said that it would “continue to fund existing grants” for PlannedParenthood and that the group would be eligible for future grants.the group had been blocked from funding because it is undercongressional investigation.

“We have been distressed at the presumption that the changesmade to our funding criteria were done for political reasons or tospecifically penalize Planned Parenthood. They were not,” Brinkersaid in a statement.

Planned Parenthood said it raised $3 million in reaction toKomen’s cutoff of $680,000, receiving the pledges from 10,000donors. In an indication of the ferocity of the abortion debate,Planned Parenthood vowed that the $3 million will be usedexclusively for breast screening services.

Cecile Richards, president of Planned Parenthood, said during aconference call, “It’s quite clear that Planned Parenthood and ourhealth centers and our doctors are eligible now to work with theKomen foundation again. I certainly take them at their word.” Sheacknowledged, however, that she had not spoken with thefoundation’s leaders.

Richards said that she was grateful for Komen’s decision andthat the experience of the last few days could strengthen therelationship between the two groups, particularly at the communityaffiliate level.

Paula Gianino, president of Planned Parenthood of the St. LouisRegion and Southwest Missouri, was thrilled to hear the news, eventhough local Planned Parenthood affiliates have never receivedgrants from Komen.

“The outpouring of support and the anger about the originaldecision was a crystal-clear statement that people in this countrydo not want politics getting in the way of lifesaving cancer careand screening for women,” she said. “The public’s reaction the lastfew days, which was unprecedented, said that they know that PlannedParenthood is a trusted provider of primary cancer screeningservices.”

During the last 48 hours, Gianino said, patients, supporters andeven people who have never been served by or contributed to PlannedParenthood have been calling expressing their support.

“They were calling and tell me they were writing checks,” shesaid.

Planned Parenthood of provides breast exams to about7,000 women each year. It was denied a Komen grant to buy breastself-exam shower cards several years ago and, according to Gianino, the Komen organization has discouraged it from applying for grantsever since.

Janet Vigen Levy, spokeswoman for the St. Louis Komen affiliate, said the reversed decision will not change the way it has beendoing business.

“They have not been a grantee; they have not applied in 10years,” she said. “If anyone would apply for a grant, they wouldall be treated the same way. We have a grant process in place witha group of anonymous grant reviewers who look overapplications.”

Komen, based in Dallas, faced a torrent of backlash in recentdays from critics, including some of its own affiliates, who saidthe foundation had caved to anti-abortion forces. many took toTwitter, Facebook and other social media to voice theircomplaints.

Planned Parenthood is the subject of a congressionalinvestigation into whether it illegally used federal money to payfor abortions. the group denies improper use of funds, but manyanti-abortion groups praised Komen for cutting off funding toPlanned Parenthood.

But now, Komen said, groups will be disqualified from receivingfunding only if they are under investigations that are “criminaland conclusive in nature and not political.”

“That is what is fair and right,” the foundation said.

Brinker, meanwhile, reached out to Komen’s affiliates across thecountry Friday afternoon in a conference call.

Laura Farmer Sherman, executive director of the San Diegoaffiliate, said after the call that Brinker “realized that this hasbeen a political storm of hurricane magnitude and that we are not apolitical organization.”

However, there was a counter-reaction from people who supportedthe Komen organization’s original decision to cut off PlannedParenthood. Douglas R. Scott, Jr., of Life Decisions International, said Komen should have anticipated a backlash once word of itsfunding cutoff plans became public. the charity, Scott said, “haseither engaged in a nasty ruse … or it is led by the most naivepeople on earth.”

Mike Paul, president of MGP & Associates, a -basedreputation management firm, said Komen will have to build up trustas a result.

Komen was the most valuable nonprofit brand in the world, according to a 2010 report by Harris Interactive, a New York-basedmarket research firm. “People wanted to be associated with everysingle thing they did,” Paul said. “And now we hear politics andpolicy has influence.”

Cindy Billhartz Gregorian of the Post-Dispatch contributed tothis report.

Good News, Bad News and Peach Yogurt

First the bad news. U.S. News & World Report was seriously asleep at the wheel Thursday as a Washington Whispers writer fell for a ludicrous, obviously fake Twitter account in writing a story on the Susan G. Komen/Planned Parenthood ordeal. Tierney Sneed wrote the story. The journo wrote, “Jill Biden tweeted Thursday afternoon, ‘when Joe heard about Susan G. Komen not funding planned Parenthood anymore, Joe threw away his pink-ribbon Harvest Peach yogurt.’” (SERIOUSLY no editor caught this.) And the good news. Washington Whispers staff humbly issued the following correction and didn’t try to sugarcoat any notion that a terrible mistake was made. that deserves at least an emoticon (as MSNBC’s Meghan McCain might say) of respect.

“Washington Whispers published in error a story stating that Joe Biden’s wife, Dr. Jill Biden, had sent a message through Twitter saying that the vice president no longer supported the work of the organization Susan G. Komen for the Cure. The story was based on a fake Twitter account.”

BALTIMORE (WJZ)– A change of heart for the Susan G. Komen Foundation three days after it pulled funds for cancer-screening away from .

Kai Jackson has more on the fallout that fueled the change.

The Komen Foundation got an earful over its initial decision to pull Planned Parenthood funding. and the outcry indicates, it heard that earful loud and clear.

There was no running from the controversy created by Susan G. Komen for the Cure, when the organization yanked funding this week from Planned Parenthood.

“I think we’ve seen this week a disgraceful display of Planned Parenthood using real thug tactics to try to bring political pressure on the Komen foundation,” Charmaine Yoest, of Americans United For Life, said.

Yet, public outrage forced Komen to reverse its decision and reinstate funding on Friday.

“It’s really critical funding and it would have been very devastating to, I mean, not just Planned Parenthood but the women that we serve,” Christielyn Dyller of Planned Parenthood of Maryland.

Komen issued a statement saying, “We want to apologize to the American public for decisions that cast doubt upon our commitment to our mission of saving women’s lives.”

“I look at these groups like sister groups, you know,” said Vera Newton, a survivor in Randallstown.

Komen broke that bond citing a federal investigation into accusations that Planned Parenthood used federal dollars for abortions– a charge Planned Parenthood denies.

“Planned Parenthood uses the overwhelming majority of its money– nationwide, I think it’s 97 percent– to deal with treatment,” Sen. Ben Cardin (D), said.

Komen raises the most money of any breast cancer organization in the country. and Planned Parenthood is the largest provider of reproductive health services in America, with most clients at or below the poverty level.

Newton supports both.

“It’s what we believe Susan Komen is all about. It’s why we walk 60 miles,” she said.

Planned Parenthood said it received $3 million in three days during this controversy. but critics of Planned Parenthood say that is just further proof that it doesn’t need the $700,000 a year that the Komen Foundation provides.

Planned Parenthood of Maryland says the organization also provides free breast exams to its clients.

Analysis far from backers celebrating anything like a fourfold payout after Micron bought Virtensys, it turns out the sad reality is that Virtensys was close to collapse and Micron is buying the ashes of a crashed startup.

Stockholders will get nothing as the firm avoided a disastrous implosion by the skin of its teeth. The picture we have obtained is that of a startup that ran out of momentum in 2011, lost its CEO, found no one was interested in buying the company and eventually faced either its closure or an asset purchase by Micron – with a hiring of all its employees – pretty much a fire-sale in fact.

Virtensys chairman and CEO John Nicholson told El Reg that this account of events is not true, likening it to a “ bomber found on moon” story, although he would not elaborate.

The story of how and why Micron came to be buying the ashes casts light of just how difficult it is to change the way enterprises do their data centre IO.

Virtensys founding idea

Virtensys was founded in Manchester, UK, late in 2005 by ex-Xyratex employee Marek Piekarski. he had the idea that the PCIe bus could be extended outside a group of servers to a switch from which PCIe-connnected peripherals such as Ethernet NICs and Fibre Channel HBAs could be shared by the servers, avoiding each of them having to have their own NIC and HBA.

As virtualised servers became more popular, putting more IO pressure on the servers’ NICs and HBAs, so the Virtensys IO virtualisation and PCIe sharing story gained a stronger appeal.

Tony Palmer became CEO of Virtensys with Piekarski serving as its chief technology officer. Three venture capital firms – SEP in the UK, Celtic Partners in Canada and GMIV of Belgium – put in $12m of A-round funding and product development began in earnest. The investors got board representation and John Nicholson joined the board as well. he was an ex-VP at both Compaq and DEC, acquired by Compaq.

In March 2007 Ahmet Houssein was appointed as the CEO and a US base was set up in Beaverton, Oregon. The board chairman was Andy Roberts. Product developments were encouraging enough for the three VCs to pump in $12 million in a B-round in January 2008 and another $16m in a C-round in August 2009, when the VIO-4000 line of IOV (IO Virtualisation) switches became generally available; Virtensys was engaged in building out its sales structure and product sales with eventual profitability as its goal.

An EMEA VP, Paul Silver, was appointed in October that year to build the EMEA channel structure. Promark was added as a US distributor in January 2010. The EMEA channel programme and initial partners were announced in February.

Things were looking rosy, but two things happened that, with hindsight, were unusual. The EMEA VP left, and John Nicholson replaced Andy Roberts as board chairman. otherwise momentum carried on; NEC started developing a blade switch module with Virtensys technology on the board, and Zycko became an EMEA distributor.

Nicholson strengthened the board by appointing mark Christensen, ex-Intel Capital, and Peter Hayden, co-founder of EqualLogic, as directors. Synopsys, a software and IP designer for semi-conductor companies, became a customer, and Keating Technologies became a Canadian channel partner.

IO Virtualisation did not take off

Behind this momentum an uncomfortable truth was building; it was darn hard to change the way enterprises carried out server IO in data centres. The company’s sales were not building fast enough and Virtensys was running out of money.

A source close to Xsigo said customers comparing Virtensys and Xsigo IO sharing products preferred the Xsigo design as it simply worked better. Another source close to Virtensys said that the products didn’t perform well in a sales sense.

CEO Ahmet Houssein left without fanfare in March 2011 with Nicholson taking over. A couple of months later Virtensys joined the NetApp Alliance Program and started working with Micron, delivering the VIO-4010 which enabled up to 16 servers to share up to 1.6TB of Micron P300 SSDs integrated with a Virtensys PCIe switch. A vCenter plugin was crafted to make it easier for VMware admins to manage that and the other Virtensys switch products.

Behind the scenes of this activity the cash burn was unsustainable. The external US PR agency’s contract was terminated in autumn 2011, and then came the news last week that Micron was buying the assets of Virtensys and hiring the employees, but not buying the company.

A Virtensys stockholder and former employee, who wishes to remain anonymous, told El Reg: “Yes, we were spending money much faster than revenue. yes, we ran out of funding and the choices for the board of directors were to fold up or be acquired. yes, the change in CEO was due to lack of promised revenue.”

Stockholders get zilch

Stephen Spellicy was Virtensys’ VP for marketing and business development in 2010 and 2011. We understand he helped shift the emphasis from IO virtualisation to PCIe-sharing. Commenting on the Micron VIO-4010 deal, he said: “This was my baby, [I] helped position Virtensys with Micron and worked on two solutions: 4010 and future 4012.”

The Micron asset purchase and employee hiring is a good thing, according to Spellicy: “I wish them only the best, they have a much better shot now. Be proud of these guys, it wasn’t easy. It’s a tough sale, changing the way people deploy network infrastructure.”

Now Micron owns its own PCIe flash array technology, enabling it to compete with Fusion-io, TMS, OCZ and other PCIe flash array vendors. no one is saying how much it paid for the Virtensys assets; Nicholson will not comment on the size of the payout.

We have been told that by the stockholder: “Payout for stockholders will be $0. Micron is acquiring the assets and hiring the employees of Virtensys into Micron. The empty shell of a company left over (Virtensys) will owe more money to the bank than the purchase price and there will be nothing left over for the stockholders.”

How much did Micron pay? Nicholson said: “I can’t comment on that; the terms are confidential.” El Reg now reckons it was some way short of the $40m funding that Virtensys received from its three backing VCs.

The conclusion is that Virtensys couldn’t make a success of its technology, crashed and would have burned were it not for the board doing the deal with Micron. Nicholson does not agree with this overall view, but won’t comment on the details. In the view of El Reg the decision by the board to do the deal with Micron and secure the jobs of Virtensys’ employees as well as give its technology a continuing shot at success is highly creditable. ®

A plane crash in Boise, Idaho has claimed the life of Micron CEO . he was 51. Boise Airport officials say that Appleton’s experimental fixed wing single engine Lancair crashed shortly after takeoff at 8:58am local time Friday after attempting an emergency landing. NTSB officials say that witnesses reported the plane climbing about 100 to 200 feet, then attempting to turn before falling to the ground.

According to Boise NBC affiliate KTVB-TV, Appleton is heard shortly after taking off telling air traffic controllers: “I’d like to turn back in… and land. Coming back in.” in the background of the audio from air traffic control a woman is heard saying “oh my god” repeatedly. The station has refused to release the remainder of the audio due to its senstitive content.

NASDAQ halted trading of Micron’s stock Friday afternoon as the news broke and remained closed through the end of trading. Officials allowed the resumption of trading in afterhours, and the stock is down four percent as of Friday evening.

“Our hearts go out to his wife, Dalynn, his children and his family during this tragic time”, the company’s board of directors say in a statement. “Steve’s passion and energy left an indelible mark on Micron, the Idaho community and the technology industry at large”.

Appleton was an avid pilot, and Friday’s incident was not his first accident. in 2004, he crashed a plane south of Boise after reportedly flying too close to the ground according to results of an NTSB investigation. both himself and a passenger walked away from the incident with minor injuries.
